Introduction to Accounting
PREREQUSITES: None (Intro to Business recommended)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will study the nature of accounting focusing on sole proprietorships. Skills are reinforced through real-world projects where students apply learned skills by completing accounting simulations. This course is appropriate for all students, and highly recommended for those considering majoring or minoring in a business field in college, or desiring to own a business. This course can be used for senior math credit. The major outcomes of this course are:
Mastering objectives of accounting 1 could allow students attending Grand Rapids Community College to earn college credit for BA156. Students should discuss this opportunity with their instructor.
MATERIALS: 1. Textbook: Century 21 Accounting., Swanson, Ross, and Hanson, Sixth Edition, South-Western, 1995.
2. Workbook to accompany Century 21 Accounting, Sixth Edition, South-Western, 1995.
3. Simulations: Viking Marine and Western Rider, South-Western, 1995.
4. Calculator (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and Pencil

- To learn skills of double-entry accounting which includes knowledge in computing, classifying, and recording numerical data to keep financial records.
- To learn the skills required to complete the accounting cycle for a sole proprietorship.
- To gain skills necessary for further education in accounting as well as any business field.
- To gain skills necessary for personal use to obtain an entry-level accounting position.
